Seasonal Tire Storage: A Practical Handoff Checklist
Toee Tire
When a seasonal tire set comes off the vehicle, two things need a place to go: the tires and the information about them. A clear storage handoff records what was removed, what needs attention and what should be checked before the set goes back into service.
This guide covers passenger-vehicle tires removed for the season. Start by identifying whether they are still mounted on wheel rims; that changes the storage arrangement. Follow the instructions for your particular tires and wheels if they differ from the general guidance below.
First, identify the set
Before the tires are removed, note their positions on the vehicle. Michelin also recommends inspecting for damage and uneven wear before storage. Treat those observations as information for the next service appointment, rather than assuming a stored set is ready to reinstall. See Michelin’s tire storage guidance.
For a dealer or service adviser, a useful record connects the customer, vehicle and tire set. “Four tires in bags” is difficult to reconcile later. A set identifier, tire make and model, size and removal date give the next person something concrete to check. If the markings are unfamiliar, our guide to tire sidewall numbers and markings explains where to start.
Clean, dry and protect
Continental recommends cleaning tires with detergent, water and a brush, cleaning the wheels too, and allowing everything to dry completely. It says storage does not require a tire dressing or gloss product. For packaging, use an airtight plastic bag for each dry tire, remove excess air and seal it. A carrying tote is not necessarily airtight. See Continental’s storage guide.
Keep the sequence visible on the handoff record: cleaned, dry, then packed. If preparation is still incomplete, record who will finish it before the set enters storage. This is a proposed workflow for clear communication, not a manufacturer certification.
Match the position to the wheel arrangement
Without wheel rims: Michelin recommends standing the tires upright, rather than stacking or hanging them. Mounted on wheel rims: Michelin recommends stacking or hanging; Continental also favours stacking for mounted tires and warns against hanging unmounted tires. Follow the tire manufacturer’s instructions and use appropriate storage equipment.

Choose a clean, cool, dry indoor location, away from direct sun, heat, ozone sources and contact with fuels, oils or solvents. These are environmental requirements, not simply a choice between a basement and a garage: assess the actual space. See Michelin’s location and positioning advice.
A handoff record you can reuse
The checklist below is an original organisational aid. Copy it into your own service record and fill it in at removal, then revisit it at retrieval. Keep private customer information in your own system.
Open the seasonal tire handoff checklist
- Identify: set ID; vehicle reference; removal date; tire make, model and size.
- Describe: number of tires; with or without wheel rims; recorded removal positions.
- Flag: observed wear or damage; photographs or inspection notes; questions awaiting a tire professional.
- Prepare: cleaning complete; completely dry; packaging complete; name or initials of the person checking.
- Locate: storage site and shelf or bay; contact responsible for the set; retrieval reference.
- Retrieve: identity matched; condition reviewed; unresolved concerns handed to the installer; return date recorded.
Separate an observation from a decision. For example, “uneven wear noted; inspection requested” leaves a useful trail. Writing “good for next winter” without a supporting inspection turns an assumption into a promise. Likewise, recording the old wheel positions does not prescribe a rotation pattern; that decision belongs with the applicable vehicle instructions and the installer.
Before the next installation
Storage is not a substitute for a condition check. Transport Canada advises regular inspection for wear or damage and checking inflation when tires are cold. The vehicle’s tire information placard gives the recommended operating pressure; the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall is not the vehicle’s recommended pressure. See Transport Canada’s tire maintenance guide.
Bring the handoff record to the next changeover and ask the tire professional to resolve any flagged concerns before installation. For background on the parts being inspected, explore Inside a Radial Tire. A useful storage process ends with an informed handoff back to service.
